The photography of Thomas Struth (born in 1954 in Geldern, living in Düsseldorf) deals with urban architecture. Objective shots show streets, buildings, or squares in various places in the US, Europe, and Japan. The normality of the architectural reality defining public space has the effect that in the photographic reproduction it, to a large extent, remains unrecognised. Thomas Struth's photographs reveal the familiar outside reality of these unconscious places, thus allowing a visual examination of the city's history, its social and cultural conditions in the way they are reflected in the architecture.
