We are pleased to announce Disguise as Dancefloor a project by Joe Namy as a live performance in the garden of Portikus.
Joe Namy is an artist and educator, based between London and Beirut, often working collaboratively through the intersections of sound, video, performance, and sculpture. Their projects often focus on the politics of music and organized sound, such as the pageantry and power of opera, the noise laws and gender dynamics of bass, the colors and tones of militarization, the migration patterns of instruments and songs, and the complexities of translation in all this - from language to language, from score to sound, from drum to dance.
Joe Namy's most recent work is a performance, a sculpture, and a research project. It links sound and alchemy to explore the subversive role of the low end and its effect on the body–extreme frequencies for extreme times.
The performance is grounded by an absorbent copper tuning platform, a site specific outdoor scenography creating and capturing situations for gestures and tones to mingle in a confluence of vibrations scored for the resonant chamber of the heart of a drum and the frequency separations of a dj's mixer.
Disguise as Dancefloor is performed live by Joe Namy with Emmilou Rößling.
Disguise as Dancefloor is accompanied by a booklet with contributions by Uzma Z. Rizvi, Malak Helmy, Brian Kuan Wood, X.PER, Taylor LeMelle, Jaime Llopis.
The work was commissioned as part of the Consortium Commissions—a project initiated by Mophradat.
Another iteration of this project to be performed at the Renaissance Society Chicago this spring.
It is supported by the French Bento Bar, Frankfurt.
