Historically, zines – publications produced with inexpensive material from everyday life, such as paper, staplers, and glue – have been platforms for artists as much as members of the counterculture to freely share ideas outside of the restrictions of traditional publishing and mainstream media.

Initiated by curators Liberty Adrien and Carina Bukuts, Portikus’ Copy Machine Residency was inspired by the poetic as well as political power of independent publishing – its constant exploration of alternative methods of cultural production and the possibilities of using publishing as a form of resistance. This series aimed to give space to practices that challenge the current logics of efficiency, embrace the experimental, seek the uncontrollable and foster community. At the end of each residency, the zine produced in a small print run will be launched with a gathering at Portikus in presence of the artist.

Émilie Pitoiset is an artist and choreographer based in Paris, France. In her practice, ranging from sculpture and installation to video and performance, she examines the resistance of bodies through art, dance, rituals, sexuality, sport, productivity, and money. She activates many symptomatic and alienating stories that animate our fantasies. The zine produced during her Copy Machine Residency at Portikus was be launched during HOW(EVER)

Her works have been presented in various institutions, such as Formerly Known As Witte de With, Rotterdam (2014), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2014), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013), SCHIRN Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2015), Tai Kwun, Hong Kong (2018), Villa Paloma, Monaco (2016), Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe (2013), Bielefelder Kunstverein (2010) and Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2007).
